It is understood that the Couertenay Arts (as it was then) was formed in 1950 by some members of the “Okehampton Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society” who wished to perform more plays, pantomimes, Music Hall and Revues than the Operatic Society had prior to that date.
During the 1980’s the club continued to perform and in 1984 with the producton of “Ring Round The Moon” the club began an association with Charles Hamilton which bought a greater professionalism to sets and productions. Other main productions with Charles were “Robinson Crusoe;” “The Sound of Music” and Rebecca”.
In 1988 the club changed it’s name to Courtenay Players. The previous name of Courtenay Arts had been established when the Club had a number of associate groups – The Drama Group; Music Group; Film Club; Photography Club; Art Group. As other associate clubs were no longer in existence it was considered the title “Courtenay Arts Club” wasa somewhat misleading. The title Courtenay Players would more accurately refvlect the activities of the club as an Amateur Theatre Club.
